University 101

How do the inner workings of UGA, USG, PSO and beyond work together? Embark on a comprehensive exploration of the intricate world of UGA in our session, “University 101.” This dynamic panel is tailored for PSO faculty and staff to ask questions to deepen their understanding of the unique complexities and nuances within the university landscape. From academic structures to institutional culture, this session provides an opportunity to build an understanding of the diverse and ever-evolving realm of higher education. Presenters:

Shannon Brooks, director, Office of Service-Learning
Shannon has served as the founding director of the Office of Service-Learning since 2005. She provides leadership, support and vision for enhancing UGA’s service-learning initiatives and its community-campus engagement. Prior to leading the OSL, Shannon worked in UGA’s Office of Instructional Support & Development (now the Center for Teaching and Learning) from 2000-2005, and in Cooperative Extension from 1995-2000. Shannon also holds a courtesy faculty appointment in the Department of Art Education in the Lamar Dodd School of Art and is the editor of the Journal of Higher Education Outreach and Engagement.
David Tanner, associate director, Government Service and Research, Carl Vinson Institute of Government
David helps governments address some of the state’s most pressing issues such as workforce development, economic development, and improving decision-making through data analytics. David oversees the Institute of Government’s local government, human resource management, planning and environmental services, data analytics, state services, and workforce and economic analysis units. Before joining the institute, David served as deputy director at the Governor’s Office of Planning and Budget, where he worked with three different governors to address key budget and policy issues for more than 12 years.
Mark Risse, director, Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant
Mark is director of UGA Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant and also the UGA Georgia Power Professor of Water Policy, with expertise in non-point source pollution management, water resources and storm water management, and extension/outreach to diverse audiences. He has been recognized as a fellow in the International Soil and Water Conservation Society, and is a Walter Bernard Hill Fellow, UGA’s highest honor for public service and outreach.
