Small Business Highlight – A Client-led Story of How the UGA SBDC Partnered With a Business Owner for a Big Win

A client from a local SBDC office (Athens, Gwinnett, Gainesville) speaks alongside their consultant about their business, the need they had when they came to the SBDC, and how it turned into a big win. The SBDC consultant will speak to how the work on their end partnered with the business owner to achieve the goals.

Target Audience: PSO faculty and staff with a friend or family who owns a business or are business owners.

Will has worked in residential construction since 1998, when he began working with his father’s company. He attended the UGA SBDC GrowSmart program at the Augusta SBDC office in 2017, where he met area director Rick McMurtrey. At that time, Impact Roofing consisted of Will and his father, and they used subcontractors to produce revenue of $200,000. Upon his father’s retirement, Will grew Impact Roofing’s revenue to $995,000 in 2019. Revenues increased to just under $2,000,000 in 2020. Revenues continued to grow to $4,000,000 in 2022, while the projected revenue for 2023 is between $5,000,000 and $6,000,000.

Prior to joining the SBDC, Rick spent more than 20 years as a Sonic Drive-In franchisee, developing the Augusta market to 13 stores and over 500 employees. Rick brings extensive knowledge in franchise development along with significant experience in marketing, advertising, human resources, and personnel management needed to grow from a one-store operation to a mid-size business.
