How To Tell a Better Story – Using Data Storytelling To Tell a Compelling and Persuasive Story

When communicating data to a decision-maker or a client, it is critical to ensure that information is presented in a way that is not only clear and concise but memorable. This session focuses on the process of telling data stories when presenting to a decision-maker or a client. It will expose participants to concepts of data storytelling in relation to a performance management framework. Participants will receive tips, tools, and other resources for interacting, interpreting, and presenting data.

Target Audience: PSO faculty and staff interested in learning how to better package and present data for presentations to decision-makers or clients. No complex data visualization background is required for this session.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand key concepts of data storytelling.
  • Learn how to select an appropriate chart to best support their data story.
  • Learn how to use color effectively in chart-making.

Presenters:

David Tanner, associate director, Carl Vinson Institute of Government
David helps governments address some of the state’s most pressing issues such as workforce development, economic development, and improving decision-making through data analytics. David oversees the Institute of Government’s local government, human resource management, planning and environmental services, data analytics, state services, and workforce and economic analysis units. Before joining the Institute of Government, David served as the deputy director at the Georgia Governor’s Office of Planning and Budget, where he worked with three different governors to address key budget and policy issues for more than 12 years.
Anna Wrigley Miller, public service faculty, Carl Vinson Institute of Government
Anna joined the Institute of Government in 2021, where she assists state agencies with state data analytics and performance management projects. She serves as the project lead for the Georgia Data Innovation Hub. Prior to joining the Institute of Government, Anna worked at the Georgia Lottery Corporation and the Georgia Governor’s Office of Planning and Budget.
